This picture has circulated on the Web, and is purported to be an article from a 1954 issue
of Popular Mechanics Magazine. Actually this is a mock control console of an early U.S. Navy submarine.

According to Popular Mechanics, the doctoring of the photo was done by Troels Eklund Andersen, a sales and tech support technician for a Danish hardware and software distributor, who entered the image in an online photo-manipulation contest.
The perpetrator of the hoax, who added the text to the photo, and attributed it to Popular Mechanics, is unknown.
If you were duped by the photo, you're in good company.
Scott NcNealy, Chief Executive of Sun Microsystems used the photo in his recent Oracle OpenWorld keynote speech to illustrate how rapidly technology improves.
